That Colour Isn't Gendered, Lady
This is a topic that I have really been bothered about lately. What is a "boy colour" or a "girl colour?"
My daughter chose Green to be her favourite colour as soon as she could talk. Like before she turned two, I asked her what her favourite colour was, expecting her to say pink, she surprised me and said "Deen" She wanted a green birthday when she turned three, and her always picks anything green in anyway she can. We had to buy her shoes from the "boys section" because little girls don't wear green. I've even witnessed other kids make fun of her because green is a "boy colour." How do you think that makes a 4yo little girl feel when she hears that? I had to explain to her that there is no such thing as "boy/girl colours" and that she could like any colour she wanted to.
My son is just shy of being a year and a half. He loves to wear his sister's dress up skirts and her purple sparkly boots. Today he found one of her pink sweaters in the hamper of clean laundry and brought it over to me for him to wear. He was so excited and will not let me take it off. I think its safe to say that he likes pink. What are the odds he'll get picked on for that when he's older.
I don't know how many times I've had other kids over at my house and get upset because I gave them a "boy plate" with their lunch. Like are you kidding me. My daughter is thrilled to have green shoes, do you think she cares that they came from the section where boys shop. One day I was out shopping and my son reached out of the cart to grab a dress. He got so excited about it, he wouldn't let me put it back. I was committed to buying and letting him wear a dress. He did end up dropping it and forgot all about it. I did get a comment that his grandpa wouldn't let him into his house if his grandson was wearing a dress. Its the same shit as with the colours. Who cares if boys wear dresses or if girls like green.
